Jewellery Making

Fed up with being in a group of 50,000 others who bought the same thing as you last week? Jewellery is a personal statement, not a commodity bought for a few pounds.

Creating your own unique jewellery is easy & inexpensive.

Enjoy the reaction of friends & family.

Before you know it they will ask you to make something for them... and soon your hobby could be paying for itself.
click here and take a look at 2 easy and inexpensive projects to get started with. These projects will get you familiar with the fundamentals.

Necklace with Pendant

Securing the pendant
On pendants with small holes or loops running parallel to the pendant you will need to use a jump ring to position the pendant flat against your chest. See the diagrams 1 and 2.

Using the jump ring will allow the cord etc to pass through with out pushing the pendant forward at the entry point.

How to do it
Using a pair of round nose pliers open the jump ring and swivel it round to create a gap to insert the pendant hole or loop. See diagram 3.

If the pendant hole or loop sits running front to back ( at right angles to the pendant) just run your cord through. See diagram 4.

If the pendant hole/loop is placed at an awkward angle where using any of the methods prescribed will still leave it sitting slightly raised against your chest you will have to use 2 jump rings. See diagrams 5 & 6.

Securing the ends of the cord
Choose a crimp end clip and eye.
Ensure the crimp is a reasonably close fit around the cord, bend the cord double if required. See Diagram 7

Using flat nosed pliers apply pressure to each end of the crimp, ensure you apply pressure at the front end of the crimp at a point just behind where you can see the end of the cord you inserted. Ensure the pressure you apply does not distort the crimp to make it look unsightly. If the crimp distorts, either too much pressure has been applied or the cord was not a tight enough fit.

Finally close one coil at the base of the crimp tightly to lock cord in. See diagram 8

Earrings

Earring piece with loop
This first one is really easy! Open the hook on the ear wire, hang the earring piece and then close the hook. Job done! See diagram 1.

Earring piece with hole
You will need a jump ring to mount this type of earring piece. See diagram 2.

Some earring pieces have holes that cannot be reached by the earring hook & will need 2 jump rings to ensure you keep it hanging correctly after it has been swinging to and fro. See diagram 3.

Beads on a head pin
Add your beads to the head pin. See diagram 4.
Ensure at least 1cm is left free at the top, if you do not fill the length of the head pin with your design cut the head pin 1cm above the top bead. See diagram 5.

Now create a loop from the protruding 1cm length of head pin using a pair of round nose pliers.

Hang your design on to the ear wire hook and then close the ear wire hook. See diagram 6.
